Days 12-14: Arequipa

Our last stop was the city of Arequipa. We got there by bus -- a slow, steamy and putrid-smelling bus that made us pine for the past comforts of the Andean Explorer. When we finally got there, we found a pleasant city with a heavy Spanish influence. The historical center of Arequipa is constructed almost entirely of sillar, a white volcanic stone that comes from the breathtaking peaks of Misti (19,000') and Chachani (20,000').

Most of our time in Arequipa was spent exploring, shopping and visiting the gorgeous Santa Catalina Monastery.
