Days 10-12: Puno and Lake Titicaca

Another highlight was the 10-hour train trip from Cuzco to Puno, on the shores of one of the highest lakes in the world, Lake Titicaca. The Andean Explorer took us up through the high plains of Peru, eventually reaching an elevation of 14,150 feet -- higher than my hike five years ago in the Himalayas!

The next day, we hopped on a boat to explore Lake Titicaca. We first visited the Uros people, who have created their own islands made of reeds in the lake. Further on, we landed on Taquile Island to see people whose lives are much less affected by "civilization" and to get a good picture of the majesty of the lake.
