Days 4-8: The Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu
After Ollantaytambo, we took the train to the town of Aguas Calientes, at the base of Machu Picchu. Our hotel was a nice one: the Machu Picchu Pueblo Lodge, a wildlife sanctuary and birdwatcher's paradise.
We visited Machu Picchu on two consecutive days. The first day, we caught the last bus up the mountain and did a rather quick reconnaissance of the area. The next day was the biggie: we arrived in the mists of the very early morning to have much of the staggeringly beautiful ruins to ourselves, then climbed to the top of Huayna Picchu overlooking the ruins. We were exhausted at the end of the day, but it was the biggest highlight of the entire trip.
